Colour Clash
I do like the Wimbledon colours of green and purple, but I think the yellow is a bit of a colour clash! After my Sainsbury's delivery this morning, I did another hour in the garden of cutting back, including cutting the dead branches off my cherry tree. I suspect it was the combination of the UK's worse heatwave, drought, then 10 days of sub zero temperatures all in six months that did the damage. I'm hoping it recovers.
Then I walked into town with G to hear a very interesting talk at the library about the RNLI at Sheringham. Next year it's the 200 year anniversary of the RNLI being established and in that time they've saved more than 144,000 lives. It has 232 lifeboat stations, 331 lifeboats and goes out up to 50 miles off the coast - all achieved via volunteers and charitable donations. HM Coastguard co-ordinates rescues at sea, they ask the most appropriate RNLI station to launch. The first two lifeboats at Sheringham were donated by the local Upcher estate. Now they can launch in 7 mins on average at Sheringham, and have a total available crew of 35.
So well done to Liam Brody, ranked 142 in the World, who beat Caper Ruud seeded 4 in 5 sets. A thrilling match.
Covid Update
The Govt has quite rightly lost its legal challenge regarding what the Covid inquiry can see. It now has until 4pm on Mon 10th July to supply in full Boris's WhatsApps, diaries and notebooks. Personally I think this challenge was a complete waste of time and public money.
The Covid Inquiry has heard how some local health officials only heard about changes in policy from TV news conferences. At the start of the pandemic, some parts of Central Govt did not have a mailing list for contacting Directors of Public Health. The whole idea of setting up a national system for contract tracing was quite rightly challenged, given the existing local teams which could have been built on (and which eventually happened).
