Generating Electricity
Princetown on Dartmoor is a strange place. The town is surrounded by moorland and is 1,400ft above sea level. I approached it today along the winding course of the now disused railway line. The first thing you notice as you approach the site of the old station is the recently constructed whisky distillery. Opposite this distinctive building is the Dartmoor Brewery, home of Jail Ale (Best behind bars!). There is also a run-down building which used to be the electricity generating Hall (see fisrt extra). The building was constructed in 1924 and this roundel was placed above the doors. It depicts the God Thor, I think, with a clutch of lightening forks. The town always seems to me to have a wild-west feel about it, with it's wide main street leading to the notorious prison (second extra). The prison once housed French and then American prisoners of war.
