Coindé, New Caledonia

We drove north from Noumea and inland from La Foa to a Kanak village where we met our guide Marie-Claude at the women’s house (main). After a welcome ceremony she showed us around - the tropical fruit spilling from trees, vegetable plots, the track leading to the old village, a waterfall and swimming hole.

After lunch at Marie-Claude’s we drove to a local couple’s place for a relaxing afternoon, dinner and a night in their gite. 

At 2:30 am I was woken by a single gunshot. Our hosts had warned there might be hunters.
