Home Again and Feelin’ Right
Apt description for finally getting home to Santa Cruz! Carole King sang these words at a free concert in Central Park on May 26, 1973. Were you there? At the time, I was across the Hudson, listening to her on the radio, suffering from ‘senioritis’ and anticipating graduating high school in a few days. Now I suffer from a different ‘senioritis’ (haha). I got to experience the event 50 years later, thanks to United’s west-bound in-flight entertainment. Today’s blip will have to serve for two blips. I think it’s the first blip I’ve missed since beginning this year’s Italian Journey. No photos were taken at all on June 18 — we were too focused on moving from point A to point B, etc. We were up at 3 AM, out the door by 4 AM, and winding through the maze of airport security as the blood red sun was rising. Hours later we are crawling through traffic from SFO and over the Santa Cruz mountains, and then…HOME! After sorting through a bin of mail, we sat on the deck to enjoy the warm sunshine (no fog!) and eat some Thai takeout (no food on domestic flights). I laid down ‘to rest my eyes’ at 5 pm, and didn’t open them again until June 19th! I spent the day unpacking — my bags and the house — until I was beginning to truly feel home again. I was feelin’ right walking the cliffs above Monterey Bay at sunset with my spousal unit and lovely offspring, breathing in the Pacific Ocean salty air, seals lazing on the beach below, and gulls gliding above.
