Melons are in

It has been fairly cool and overcast today. Tomorrow they say we may get some sun, which would be nice for us and the plants.
I finally got my melons planted out. The soil is actually very nice and dark. The photo shows that there is straw and leaves on the top and it makes the soil look light and washed out.
Behind the melons I've put tomato cages so the melons can climb them instead of sprawling everywhere. We'll see if I can train them. Then there are the garlic, which are doing very well. Behind the garlic are the potatoes that overwintered. They are coming right along too. I also have some beets and lettuce in this garden area.

*EDIT* I forgot this cool sighting that Dan and I had last evening. I was giving him his nightly tick check and he said "hey, there's a bittern in the back yard" I grabbed my glasses and camera and sure enough it was there. It wandered over to my very densely packed perennial bed and lurched forward and grabbed a vole! It proceeded to gulp it down and then calmly flew off. It was like it knew it had a vole rendezvous just waiting. Dan and I were agog. We couldn't believe we had seen that. Of course my pictures were terrible. The lighting was low and shutter speed was slow. I've said it before but what a bittern year!
