Well the forecast was right - it did rain last night. We were expecting 13mm, but I don't think we achieved anything like that - the ground was barely damp. But every little helps!
I met a Keep Oban Beautiful friend after lunch at the piece of woodland behind Oban High School which we feel should be cleared of rubbish and protected. We wanted to see what we might be able to achieve, if permission was granted, without spoiling the area more than we needed to. There's quite a bit of rubbish, a big pile of concrete posts, and a lot of non-native shrubs such as snowberry, cotoneaster and spiraea. In front of the woodland is a wide swathe of grassland with quite a number of native orchids - we'd love to protect that, but my last attempt to save an orchid meadow here met with total failure. Further along the woodland the area has been turned into a playground by local kids and many trees chopped, presumably for firewood. We would love to save it, but have no illusions about our success.
My Blip today is of the new High School, completed in 2018 after the demolition of the original school which was built in 1890. Rather stark - I thought that the bus rather complemented it!
The woodland is behind me, as in the extra.
