Tiananmen Square anniversary
Do you remember what you were doing on 4th June 1989? I do for a very special reason.
We had gone north to stay for a long weekend with my cousin, Tony, in Mallaig with our two Chinese students from Stirling university, Grace and Phyllis.
Tony had quit his job in England with ICI for the simple life of a fisherman and he offered to take us out in his boat . But first he switched on the television to check the weather forecast (this was pre internet days).
To our horror we saw unfold before our eyes the Tiananmen Square uprising.
Grace burst into tears, she had a brother working in China, and Phyllis demanded the use of the phone to call her father, a stockbroker, to get him to pull her money out of her bank in Hong Kong .
Today Grace is in a seminary in Hong Kong and Phyllis lives in Canada.
