Welcome back Dr Makame
IMPACT Zanzibar has welcomed back Dr Makame, a paediatric surgeon who has been away on a surgical specialisation course in Dar-es-salaam.
'Dr Makame had to organise an urgent paediatric surgical camp, after noticing a high number of children who were on a waiting list, including some of them who were in urgent need of surgery,' describes Dr Kassim (Head of IMPACT's programme) 'The camp saw big umbilical hernia of two children repaired and three unilateral undescended testicles of three children operated. The hernias may lead to intestinal obstruction and undescended testicles may end up causing infertility and cancer development if left in the abdomen and not operated and placed to the scrotum. Total of 21 children were operated during the camp.'
