Between fen and mountains

Shade soon

The trees in the square will soon be providing shade. They are pruned every year to maximise that effect. I went into the village to get some cash and ended up having a long chat with one of the elderly locals who was bemoaning the fact that the village is going to the dogs as there are too many council employees appointed who do very little but are friends of the Maire. She said there is no need for a small village to have five policemen who spend a lot of their time smoking cigarettes and chatting. There is some truth in what she says. I played tennis in the afternoon. It was rather hot and muggy but the expected rain did not arrive. I also bit the bullet and ordered the new veranda. Although the roof I recovered in the court judgement can be used, the existing windows cannot. I will have to repurchase a lot of materials so the project will end up coming out about €7,000 over budget. However, it has to be done.
