Port Lincoln
….Is a small city of 15,000 on the southern point of the Eyre Peninsula. It was first mapped by Matthew Flinders (and his cat Trim) in early 1800s. Three Aboriginal mobs lived here and called the area Kallinyalla. Port Lincoln is best known for seafood and a horse called Makybe Diva which won the Melbourne Cup three times and many other premier races winning $14.5m+ . There are more millionaires here per population than anywhere else in Australia, income mainly from tuna fishing.
We checked out the marina, foreshore and a cafe this morning and this afternoon I walked down to the jetty at the bottom of the caravan park. It’s a very livable place.
Did you know Makybe Diva is made up of the first two initials of the owner’s staff (he was a tuna fisherman)? Maureen, Kylie, Belinda, Diana and Vanessa. Port Lincoln is the biggest fishing port in the southern hemisphere, also exports grains and other seafood.
One of the tours you can do is to swim with great white sharks. They give you breathing masks and drop you down in a (shark proof) cage. No thanks!
