Mystery Solved
On Tuesday morning we noticed a pile of soil on the path and a large hole in the border above. Clearly something had been digging in the night - but what?. Mr Flum swept it up and refilled the hole.
This morning we noticed a pile of soil on the path and a large hole in the border above. Something had been digging - again. But now we know who, because we set the trail camera to watch.
At half past midnight a fox came along and made short work of re-excavating the hole, the soil being quite dry and friable. But why? What is there so attractive to a fox? Extra photo shows the culprit, up to its shoulders in Hole, looking for - what?
One explanation might be that this is precisely where I photographed the ants' nest; and where in the past the males have emerged to fly. But how much nutrition can be found in a few ant grubs?
Mr Flum swept up the soil and refilled the hole and this time laid a few slabs over the top. We await the foxes reaction with interest.
