Mersey Crossing

It’s hospital day again. It’s a whole day thing as usual. The staff are really good, we’re all on first name terms. I take the opportunity to get out and explore the local area a bit both in the morning and the afternoon.

The main blip is from my afternoon amble on Wigg Island, eight minutes from the hospital. The island is now a community park, but historically armaments were manufactured here. It’s only in recent years that the site has been decontaminated. At its eastern end it is crossed by this structure, the second Mersey Crossing.

My morning trip was to Runcorn Hill, ten minutes from the hospital. Now a large park, it was formerly a big sandstone quarry - the source of the stone for Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral, as well as New York’s harbour walls. It has views across the Mersey estuary, as well as the Ship Canal and River Weaver. The extras are two views - one looking towards the lighthouse at Hale Point, with Liverpool airport’s control tower beyond. The other looking towards the Frodsham Ridge, and beyond that the Welsh hills, with elements of the chemical industry which is concentrated here, as well as wind turbines on the marshes. A real jumble of structures.
