Norway's National Day
Today is Norway's National Day and it was our last day in Bergen. Our hotel was very busy with visitors who had arrived for the celebrations and processions that were taking place in the city later in the day. When we went for breakfast the dining room was decorated with flags, bunting, flowers and there were special cakes and meringues decorated in the colours of the Norwegian flag.
We were told that we needed to leave early as there would be crowds in the street. It actually wasn't too bad. The bus to the airport that would normally pick us up could not get to our hotel as the roads were cordoned off in readiness for the parade. We had to walk 40 minutes to the bus station but I actually really enjoyed the walk. Lots of buildings were decorated and most men, women and children were wearing the Norwegian National costume. There were some really beautiful outfits. Lots of people seemed to be carrying food and cakes.
To be honest, I was sorry that we were leaving today and would have loved to have stayed until tomorrow so we could have joined in the celebration.
Sadly, today was in Bergen was very cold (about 5 degrees) with some rain so I think some people would be freezing as they did not have coats on covering their costumes.
We had a great flight home and arrived at Newcastle 50 minutes early. A really lovely break.
I have attached a couple of extras. I was not brave enough to ask people to pose for me.
