A glimpse of the field pond

The coolest thing happened this morning. I could hear the bitterns calling and I thought after I get my morning chores done I will head over to the little pond to see if I could see them. The one calling was really loud.
So inside the house I looked out and OMG there were TWO bitterns in our front meadowy area. These birds are really elusive and I've only ever heard their distinctive "onk-y-chonk" ringing out in the early morning. They are a type of heron. And blend in to the cattails so you can never see them. They also like to stand with their heads pointing straight up and they look just like a stick. (you can see the way one is standing in the extra)
I took some pictures (one from inside the house) they really aren't the best but I've added them to the extras so you will get an idea. I went out and stalked one of them down to the pond across the road... not the big long pond but our smaller field pond. One stayed hidden in the cattails but I could hear it and I saw another standing in the field next to the pond. I scared it into flight and got a not very good picture.
My main photo is down by the pond and I thought it looked nice as I listened to the bittern calling.
Here is a link to a video someone in Maine posted so you can really see what an American bittern looks and sounds like. They are so neat.
