Guernica

Hello blippers, we're back!

Our wee break over the past couple of weeks covered a period when we were awaiting more contributions to our journal of shots for our blipper-sourced online photo album of places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series). In the past few days we have received two more. This is the first. We'll blip the second one soon too.

We thank Ceridwen for this shot to represent Guernica. Pictured is a special tree known as the Gernikako Arbola. The Wikipedia entry for the tree tells us that it 'symbolizes traditional freedoms for the Biscayan people, and by extension for the Basque people as a whole'. Ceridwen explains the background to her picture:

'In 1984, my partner (who also blips as ppatrick) and I travelled with our bikes to Santander on the ferry, and from there made our made our way to Bilbao and the Basque country via a somewhat punishing route through the hills. We were interested in Guernica historically, and we also had a Basque friend who met us there and took us around. We explored the town and its surroundings, had some excellent food, watched a game of pelota and partook of a village barbecue on the coast. We wisely took a narrow gauge train back to Santander.'

Lorna mentions Guernica in her war diary entry of November 14th 1940. Here she compares the bombing of Coventry that night with the Fascist attack on Guernica in April 1937. Listen to Lorna's great-great niece actor Bethany Ray read this diary entry in Episode 7 of our podcast series

Coventry also happens to be one of the 14 places left on our list of places to represent in this journal. If you live in Coventry, or nearby, or know someone who does, perhaps you could source a photo for us?

Please send your contribution(s) of Coventry and/or any of the other 13 locations listed below (not previously blipped) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk. Then we can feature it/them alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. Thank you!
