During the covid lockdown when the council gardeners were not cutting grass, there were patches of the pale mauve Cuckooflower (Cardamine pratensis) so before they cut the verge this year I noticed a few surviving flowers. The flower was so named as it starts to flower when the cuckoo arrives although I doubt if any will be heard locally. Other names are lady’s smock and milkmaids.
