Between fen and mountains

A full day

It has been a full and tiring day, but very enjoyable. We decided we would walk the 12 km round trip to Periac de Mer for lunch. On the way we walked down the lanes through vineyards, looking out over the sea and on our return walked beside the étangs and admired the flocks of flamingos and wading birds. The lunch was very good. I had green crab soup with rouille and grated cheese, followed by lamb parcels with potatoes and fresh vegetables. My dessert was a lavender crème brûlée. After a short pitstop at the house, we went back in to Narbonne to the Archbishops palace and visited the art exhibition and the cathedral treasury. The treasury had peculiar domed brickwork. If you stood, facing the wall in one corner and whispered, you could be heard in the other corner, 20 metres away! I particularly enjoyed the North African section of the gallery. I also climbed the tower to get panoramic views over the city. The 147 steps were tiring at the end of the day, but it was worth it.
