Betsy was very pleased to get her copies of Maggot Moon and The Weight of Water today. She saw the authors speak at a local theatre on a trip with the school book club.

She said both authors were so interesting, but that Sally Gardner was particularly inspiring. At school she was told she was 'unteachable', though she was actually dyslexic. She was unable to read until she was 14. Her dyslexia was so severe she even changed her name to Sally when she was 15 because even then she was completely unable to spell her given name, Sarah. How terrible it must be to reach the age if 15 without being able to spell your name. Especially when your teachers don't believe there is anything they can do to help you.

She's now written more than 20 books for children and young people and won about 10 awards. What an inspiration. I wonder what those teachers think now?

Tomorrow the author of Trash is coming to the school.
