Laura

A bit of a strange title for a male bust, but this place was the entrance of the former coal mine "Laura" from 1899 to 1970.

Laura was the first name of the wife of Anthony Wackers from Herzogenrath, who along with his brother Gustav Schümmer had applied for the extraction of coal in Eygelshoven. Concession on January 14, 1873
On June 26, 1899 was founded in Brussels the "Société des Charbonnages Reunis Laura & Society". Founder of the company was General Albert Thijs, president and founder of a bank in Brussels.

Led by the first director of "Laura & Society", the mining engineer Raymond Pierre, was started in 1900 with the first drilling.
Around 1900 began with the deepening of the shaft I (Wilhelmina) and shaft II (Hendrik). In 1904 it reached a depth of 183 meters. In 1905 they started with coal production.
In 1908 the "Laura" was affected by a major disaster. In a boiler explosion took place, where seven miners were slain and five seriously injured.

In 1913 there were problems with the marketing of coal fines and therefore was the briquettes built in 1917, where briquettes and ovoids were produced.

From 1935 to 1937 they went further with the deepening. Shaft II reached a depth of 274 meters and shaft I a depth of 373 meters. And so on .....

On the coal Laura ther have worked from 1900 to 1970 sixteen nationalities, 7.725 million tons of coal and 32 million tons of coal briquettes and ovoids produced.
