BABE Rally Day 5. Final. The End. That's it. Done.
We had the final night of BABE Rally at the Checkered Parrot on Royal in the French Quarter, New Orleans. Our usual haunt. The bar very nicely seals off the balcony part of the restaurant for our group - the balcony is open to cheer any late teams that drive by.
Bitter sweet.
The winners of the event were a nice couple in a Saab. But the winners of the whole event over the last 8 years was this chap on the left and his son, Gary and Danny.
For the last 5 years Gary drove a crapheap of a car from California to New York (Harrisonburg this year), then down to New Orleans, and then drove home to California each time. His son who is very autistic has been his copilot for the last 3 years. I cannot call his son a handicap as that would be disrespectful, but I can think of easier copilots to manage. Not that that it stops us tormenting Gary with challenges. The challenge to spot a pink car one year was still being played 8 months later by Danny.
What makes Gary stand out is that he is always happy, never argues a point, always does the challenge but rarely wins anything, and will always help out if given a chance. If our teams were made up of just this guy, BABE Rally would still exist next year, but it doesn't.
Ironically, Gary rather threw a spanner into the points today. Instead of his average/above average points that he usually scores, he did rather well. So well in fact that it totally messed up the scoreboard!
Will I miss BABE Rally? Nope. Had enough of teams and all their bullshit.
