Schloß Burg an der Wupper

We have a long holiday weekend here in Germany, for the celebration of Pfingsten (Pentecost or Whit Sunday). And today was a beautiful, sunny, warm day. We took full advantage of it, by whisking the boys off to tour a local castle and watch a Medieval Play.

Schloss Burg is situated on the river Wupper in Solingen. It is purportedly the largest reconstructed castle in North Rhine-Westphalia. Originally built in the early 12th century, it was in complete ruins by 1845, but almost fully reconstructed by the end of the 19th century. Sadly, in 1920, shortly after restoration was complete, the castle was largely destroyed by fire. Thus the historic structures that today are a popular tourist destination were erected less than 100 years ago. Still, it's a wonderful place to visit, with authentic charm and beautiful vistas.

This weekend there is a special medieval jousting exhibit by Georgs Ritter. It was definitely the highlight of the day.

See more images of the castle and performance :)
