The moon was shining above Edinburgh Castle and St Cuthbert’s Church as we made our way to the Usher Hall to see the RSNO perform a concert with the award winning Jess Giilam playing Gluzunov’s  Saxophone Concerto.  I was very interested in watching the many percussionists which included three who played four car hooters each with two in their hands and two with their feet in the Car Horn Prelude  to “Le Grande Prelude” by Ligeti.  However the highlight was the performance of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” with the illustrator and author James Mayhew painting illustrations to the music onstage which were projected onto a large screen as the music played.  It was a most enjoyable concert and not one that I would normally have chosen for the music but seeing it being performed made it very worth seeing.
