Sarcoscypha species
On my morning walk with the spaniel I spotted a nice colony with twenty or so of these Sarcoscypha fungi. Distinguishing between Sarcoscypha austriaca (the Scarlet Elfcup) and Sarcoscypha coccinea (the Ruby Elfcup) is almost impossible even for experts so I have no chance. I think its a beautiful structure whichever it is. In this photograph you can see the tiny immature fruiting body in the foreground with a more mature specimen behind. When fully mature they become quite irregular in shape and almost completely flat.
