On a lovely sunny morning . . .
. . . we found a railway, a river and a great restaurant for lunch.
We knew about ‘Hidden River’ restaurant before Grace Dent found it, but we had never been. Then it featured recently in ‘The Observer’ as part of an article about great food in Cumbria - who knew!! But we still hadn’t been . . . until today.
It does take some finding, as it is in the area between England and Scotland called ‘The Debatable Land’, always a mystery; although we’ve wandered the place many times we still get lost. But it is well worth finding - an excellent place set in the middle of nowhere serving delicious, imaginative food. Super service and reasonable prices. We will be back.
And we found part of the now-dismantled Waverley Railway Line (although part of the Scottish section has been brought back into use). This was an Edinburgh / Carlisle route, only 21 miles of which was in England. My picture is us looking out over the track bed at Lyneside, not far from Longtown. I do love pondering a disused railway like this, there is something quite nostalgic about it. Our shadows show what a lovely day it was for ‘walking the line’ - this bit is now a cycle track so easily walkable. The station at Lyneside is still there, now a rather splendid private house.
And the River Lyne - we found we were following it for much of our morning - might need some more investigation - nothing I like better than finding a river I didn’t know about!
