"straight from the heart"

So this year I have decided to get used to doing things on my own now that my friends are gradually starting to leave Dundee over the next few years and I will lose my friend unit to do things and go places with. So far I've survived the cinema on my own, and tonight I decided to go to the theatre on my own. However, in my defence, both times I have went on my own because I felt that the film Les Miserables and this play tonight would be things that none of my friends would like. And I think I've been right on both occasions!

'Love Letters' is exactly what it says on the tin. A play about love letters. Two actors sit on stage at separate writing desks and literally read their scripts from pieces of paper as if they were reading the actual letters sent back and forth to each other. Initially difficult to get used to but as it went along, I began to not notice it and the 'ping-pong' dialogue back and forth between the characters became normal. Even the lack of reply from the other character made you realise that they never got one in the post! It was very cleverly written!

I fell under the spell of this 50 year love story between childhood sweethearts who grew up together but gradually grew apart and yet still managed to keep in touch through letters despite their lives following different paths with different outcomes.

In the end I made the correct choice to go alone as I was crying my eyes out at the unexpected twist in the story and listening to the words that the male character penned in his last letter. I won't spoil the storyline in case any of you decide to go and see it on its UK tour...

As the tagline for the play said...

"...don't let the one be the one that got away..."
