Hieroglyphs

We got to see the exhibition in the end. Having been turned away from the British Museum because of industrial action on our first visit a few weeks ago, I booked again for today, when we knew we would still be in Hythe.

Then we discovered there could be more strikes . . .

We decided we would take a chance, especially as we were informed that they would be trying to keep the exhibition open for ticket-holders only. So we got the train from Sandling and made our way to the British Museum again. And indeed the museum was closed, but ticket-holders were allowed in.

Hieroglyphs: Unlocking the Ancient Egypt
A fine exhibition telling the story of the discovery of the Rosetta Stone (see extra) that was the key to decoding hieroglyphs and thus providing us with so much information about life in ancient Egypt. I don't know why, but I have always been fascinated by all of this, so I was very happy to have finally made it to the exhibition.

Gordon discovered that the Egyptian word for cat is mau - pronounced MAH-oo, which might sound like meow. He thought the whole adventure was worth it to find that out!!
