On the way to La Fortuna
A 5.30 start this morning to be in time to see the birds at the feeding area, who decided not to. More rice and beans with scrambled egg and then off promptly in the minibus to La Selva Biological Station close to Sarapiqui. On a good day you can see half of Costa Rica’s bird population and is a regular haunt for documentary makers include David Attenborough who visited just before the pandemic. As day trippers we were limited to a couple of small, very interesting, trails. There was another suspension bridge to cross easier in some respects than yesterday mainly because it was shorter, it was thought much more shuggerly. I am amazed how nearly everyone else is totally nonchalant. I have decided a trip to Nepal would not be a good idea.
A short comfort stop after a 100km or so, also to look at the lounging iguanas. The extra is a kingfisher, crow sized, possibly a female Ringed Kingfisher, will need to check with our local guide.
Lunch, coffee and chocolate cake in La Fortuna and a successful trip to the ATM to get some Colones. They are very attractive, decorated with Costa Rican fauna. There is, understandably, some discontent about the name which is linked to Christopher Columbus discovering the place.
Anyway, tonight’s accommodation is delightful, spacious, aircon and even a hairdryer. A small refreshing pool. We are eating in downtown La Fortuna and the menu, we have preordered, sounds delicious - local vegetables, sautéed fish with yucca croquettes, and a lemon cream slice.
