William the Cat

Performed by classes at the school, this charming little play tells the story based on the book by the Countess of Rosslyn and depicts many of the features of Rosslyn Chapel, in particular a green man who, it was discovered, had lost his nose. On close examination a great deal of damage and deterioration was discovered, resulting in a programme of repair and restoration throughout the building, bringing back to life the fascinating array of carvings for which the chapel has become famous.

The William of the story was a real cat, who lived with a family nearby but frequented the chapel and was often found sleeping on a sunny pew or, during recitals, might walk across the knees or below the chairs of the audience, considering whether to settle on a lap or just wander about, causing a pleasant distraction during the proceedings. He came from a line of similar 'Williams' but, after many years of devoted visitor-duty, he was put to sleep in August of 2021, at the grand age of 17. I trust that a successor is in place but need to visit to make sure... .
