Little Library
This is my favorite community little library in the neighborhood. One of the things I like about living here is what I call the “urban detritus,” that is, the abundant free stuff either left out in front of people’s houses for the taking, abandoned on the sidewalk, or indecorously trashed. The little library’s reflect this neighborhood trend, but also the neighborhood’s other trend: gentrification. It’s really nice to see these little libraries (and sometimes food bank or food bank/library hybrid) around, they’re quaint and have many styles. This one outside a community garden is especially prosaic. But you know this wouldn’t be happening if this neighborhood wasn’t burgeoning with middle class progressives who like quaint things, as opposed to the artists and freaks and working class people who made up most of the population only 20 yrs. ago. So this makes me both happy and sad.
