Between fen and mountains

Built into the rock

Our neighbour's house emerges from the rock. Lots of the houses in the old village are built against outcrops. Inside the white house there are even small mine workings. Both the living room and the bedroom have cavities, one of which extends two or three metres. There was a lot of industrial activity in the village in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This mostly involved extraction of iron ore and anyone owning a property that had a vein of ore in the rock would chip away at it and sell the mineral for a little extra money. It was a sunny morning so I played tennis for an hour and a half before going down to the art group in the afternoon. We had a couple of new people attend as a result of the Mairie putting out an announcement on Facebook.
