Between fen and mountains

Marble pavement

There are marble quarries in the local mountains but they are all closed now. I walked up to one awhile back and the blocks of marble had been cut ready for transport and then the workers were called up to serve in the first world war. The quarry never reopened. It is unusual to walk on marble pavements. They look nice but they are treacherous when wet. I often walk in the road rather than risk slipping on them. I went to the courts early to break up some of the ice so that the court would be playable this afternoon. Only three turned up so we all got a bit cold but at least it was some exercise.
