Snapshots of my world

Black Dyke Mills.

Black Dyke Mills in Queensbury is quite the building and has stood tall since it was built in 1835 at the height of the industrial revolution. The mill was incredibly self sufficient in it's prime employing it's own plumbers and joiners...even having reservoirs built around it to provide it's own water supply!

In 1989 the company went into administration and the mill was sold off. I guess it's fair to say that today evidence of it's glory days as world leaders in textile production are few.

Perhaps the greatest legacy is The Black Dyke Mills Band, although they have dropped the word mills from their name I believe! They remain a well known brass band and are still based in good old Queensbury.

Today in the spaces where once yarn was spun, woven and dyed you'll find many different businesses from a boxing gym to a charity shop, an electric 'hovercraft' race track to a music school. There are rumours that the current mill owner wants to further develop it as a retail, leisure and visitor centre...we shall see!

And there ends my history lecture for the day!! :-P
