Blooming Narcissus

Another torrential downpour for a couple of hours this morning followed by off and on showers and almost constant drizzle the rest of the day. I was still wearing my jammies when Dana and Jim walked up with Blake as they usually do on Saturday morning. I didn't think they would walk in the rain but I was wrong. They are testing out hiking boots and other gear for a trip to Patagonia in March. I don't think they really thought we would be interested in the Farmers' Market today and they were right but they still brought us a loaf of cinnamon swirl bread...Dana said they were down to just one row of diehard stall holders.

I did manage to get dressed after they left but couldn't help wondering why I was bothering. Probably because if I stayed in my pajamas, even new ones which these are, all day I would start feeling like I was sick. Just like naps, pajama days just don't work for me, no matter how tempting.

Fergus and friends, tiny tree frogs with big voices have returned, and the constant rain seems to suit them, as they don't  usually return to our fountain/pond until late March or April. They are more vociferous than usual, and I'm glad to hear that something is still enjoying the rain.

The narcissus next to the driveway began with just a couple of plants. Neither Janet nor I planted them and the row of plants gets longer every year. This strip between our two driveways which included a crape myrtle and four pineapple guava trees was burned black in the fire, but the narcissus bulbs survived underground and the pineapple guavas are making a remarkable comeback.  The narcissus are blooming just about on schedule, but all the rain seems to be preventing them from fully opening. New ones tend to pop up all over without any assistance or intervention from anybody. They are always the first sign of spring, but this year spring seems a long way away.

We managed to get out for our daily creek check without getting wet. It's always good to get out for a walk, even a very small one.We ran into neighbors Ann and Paul and decided to get together for wine and cheese  later.
