Hedging

Today was as rainy as yesterday and I had the choice of going to a funeral of an old friend or helping plant a hedge at Dubwath Silver Meadows, one of the local reserves, where he often visited. I decided that Dennis would have enjoyed creating something for wildlife so I plumped for that. We had got some funding for fencing and lots of whips from a number of sources. With the volunteer group, all getting very muddy and damp we jumped onto our spades dug, hit bed-rock, got tangled in string and bramble, staked and guarded.  It didn’t take long to plant up a double row of about 90m with hazel, downy birch, holly, hawthorn, crab-apple and some maiden oak down the centre. I can just imagine Dennis leaning on the fence at the end and saying, ‘Only have to wait another 10 years now!’
