Glimpses of Me

Think Only This of Me

Rotherham's Main War Memorial:
Cenotaph and Memorial Gardens, Clifton Park

"If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England"

The cenotaph and memorial gardens is located near the main entrance of the park at the junction of between Doncaster Road and Wharncliffe Street. The cenotaph sandstone rises from a base to three granite stepped levels. At the top of the lowest level at front and rear is a carved wreath, on each of the two sides is a bronze sword. It bears the name of 544 men from the First World War, but sadly does not list any names from the Second World War.. The wall is 1.92 m high, 15 m long; and 56 cm deep. You can see that I've included a wee man on the left side (in pink!) too gauge the magnitude of this memorial, best seen LARGE

And a glimpse of the rest of the garden, although its quite expansive..

I encountered a gentleman who says he comes here often to remember the fallen, a poignant view.. This one reminds us that there are the ones 'Our Beloved Warriors' left behind.. I wanted to ask him more but the skies opened up and rained down on us... Alas, tears from heaven for the ones left behind..

Have to cut it short for now as Mr M has just come home, a quick dinner and we're off back to Walsall for more shed-building..

Have a great week y'all!
