Life after death
A few days ago on the national news there was a story about a young man from Seattle, Washington who left in 1914 to fight in WWI. Before he left he chained his bike to a tree. He was killed in battle, so his family left the bike chained to the tree as a sort of memorial to him. The story featured a picture of the bike all these years later--the tree grew up & over the bike, which is now about 4 feet off the ground, with the tree surrounding a good portion of it. It made me think of 2 headstones my husband & I saw when we went looking for his great-grandma's grave, so we drove back & I took this picture. The tree was obviously planted when the grave stones were set--I'm guessing, from the dates on the stones around them, that it was the early 1900's. The tree has grown & has almost totally covered the headstones, so we don't know who is buried there or when they died, but the tree still stands guard over them.
