Loafers’ Wall and the old Sisters’ Cemetery
Behind the high wall is The Terrace; a really great, mostly open air café/restaurant. But do people enjoying a meal there realise that they are sitting above heaps of bones. This used to be St Peter Port Cemetery and before either of these walls were built it extended down the hill more or less to the Town Church. It was known as The Sisters’ Cemetery but it is a bit of a mystery why because there was never any convent with any connection to it.
The cemetery was full so new cemeteries were opened. New roads and these two walls were built and the cemetery behind the wall was levelled, headstones moved and just a cross left. Some bones were moved but most are simply still there…
