Over the Horizon

Too much fun

As I've said it before, sometimes too much of a good thing can be wonderful! Absolutely.

The past 24 hours have been like that. Last night we went to see a movie in Cheboygan, small town America. On the way home we stopped off the road, cut the engine. The breeze moaning through the pine forest down an old gravel road beside the station. Last year Katie and I called in a barred owl here, with our own voices mind you. Second time around with our dubious professor and friend Vanessa, we did it again, rather Katie did. 'Who cooks for youu'all'....hooo ho ho howa!..echoing in the darkness. Then silence, until just over our heads high up in the pines we have an answer and shivers down the spine! We called in two barred owls this time and commenced them talking in earnest, hoots and cackles back and forth for almost a half hour as we listened below in grinning awe. That primordial feeling of goosebumps and magic you get in the wilderness hearing a wolf howl, or owls calling back and forth into the night...

In the morning Katie, Brendan and his sister Christina, and I went biking for many miles through country roads in search of an elusive yard sale. Goofing off and racing all the way home, a rowdy little gang of beach cruiser bikers. The loot in the basket, old ridiculous board games, dogeared books, and down on their luck china cups. Morell mushroom hunting in the afternoon, but alas no luck this time. Too dry we think and so we paid a visit to the beer store and sat by the lake savoring some brew and listening to Brendan saw away on the fiddle. Tunes drifting out on the water....

Finally to top it all off, the whole camp had a square dance that night. Nerdy and fun, laughing with my students while unraveling miss-placed steps late into the night.

Too much fun.
