The Christmas Lights were switched on last Saturday but as they were all the same decorations as in past recent years I did not make a special journey into the town centre to see them. Finally, I needed to go to the shops one evening, so I shot off a few shots for Blip.

When I was a teenager living in Sutton Coldfield I would often go into Birmingham to see local and visiting bands in the blues clubs such as Henry's Blues House, and one of the best of these was Chicken Shack. Their lead singer and guitarist was Stan Webb but they also featured their piano and organ player Christine Perfect who by this time was living in Birmingham and occasionally took the lead vocals on songs such as When The Train Comes Back and I'd Rather Go Blind, and these were the highlights of the act.
The latter became a single in 1969 and the record followed the arrangement of Etta James' 1967 original right down to the rather savage fade-out ending. The single was also included on her first album, Christine Perfect, released in 1970 just after she left Chicken Shack, but before she had played with Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac as a session pianist. There she met and married their bass player John McVie. She  stayed on as a band member, including when they moved to America and became Fleetwood Mac. The band's eventual worldwide success is well documented, and she was in some ways the soul of the band right up to the present, but it is for those early years that I shall remember her.
