Smithfield Market

Went for an early morning breathe of fresh air after a bad night’s sleep. Smithfield meat market is right outside. I went a walk through it but didn’t have the confidence to take a photo inside as I was the only ‘tourist’ and not really fitting in. The men in white hats were staring at me with disapproval :-). The amount of customers to meat workers seemed out of proportion and most of the action was outside, loading lorries. I guess most of the selling is done far earlier than 5am.
The meat porters or whatever their job is, completely take over the street. There was a distinct absence of the sort of health and safety you get when moving forklift trucks around a factory. FLTs and pallet trucks all over the place, down pavements, the lot! Drivers and supervisors shouting and cursing each other on the street! Interesting to observe. A different side to London.
