Frosty Bonnet

Although small, Frosty Bonnet is one of the more easily identified of the bonnets, thanks to its crystal-coated cap, the hairs on its stem and the pronounced bulb at the base of the stipe. At the moment we have plenty of these pretty little fungi, growing in groups of two or three, on our willow log-pile. 

In the dark days of late autumn this pile is providing a rich hunting ground for all sorts of overlooked wildlife - fungi, slime moulds, mosses and springtails. Today I tried to photograph some extremely small cup fungi, probably less than a millimetre in diameter, but I really need more magnification and light! My photo of a springtail grazing in a young Jelly-ear was slightly more successful.
