'Like us on Facebook'

Came across this in a coffee bar today. At first glance it's an ad for Facebook but all it is is a plea for likes. In Club Tropicana, all that was missing was the breeze, and with this, all that's missing is the please, the next please and the 'pretty please'. It's a bit desperate, a quantitative beg when they really should be going for qualitative interaction. The 21st century superficial insecurity to like me, but lacking substance. I just wanna be loved. No you don't, you wanna love and do the loving, and be part of a meaningful, proper, loving relationship. Like us. Pah.

The thumbs up is nice, and although I don't use Facebook, I see value in it of course. Good luck to them. My beef is more about companies who don't go in for content, who use the vanity figures of Facebook likes and Twitter followers. And why promote Facebook, why have the icon on your ad materials? Drive people to your website and make it worth their while when they're there. Engage, interact, chat and have a conversation, or in old money, socialise with your customers. Tell them your story and listen to theirs. Way more to a customer relationship than a like. I get that like is preferable to dislike, sure, but the bigger picture is more than the thumbs up.

Thanks for reading.
