Moth Orchid.

On July the eleventh, last year, a friend of The Old Lady gave her this orchid. The specimen has been on the kitchen window sill ever since, the best place for it as far as climate is concerned but not the most visible place for TOL to appreciate it. As I write this, there is a display of 18 flowers and no sign that it will ever stop flowering. The individual blooms seem to last for ever and there are a few fresh buds developing.

The original collectors christened their specimens "Phalaenopsis", which means "moth-like", since the shape is reminiscent of a moth in flight. Well, that's what it says on the label; personally I'm more inclined towards a resemblance to a butterfly. The genus hails from south east Asia though this particular model probably doesn't exist in the wild.

Oh, the weather was miserable today (see yesterday's comments on summer) so it was an indoor blip day.
