Homeward bound

It’s been one heck of a long day - 36 hours since we were in our bed in Chichen Itza.

The BA Cancun to Gatwick flight was fine, apart from the food. It’ll be a long time before I face a bland black bean. (Mexican food was disappointing - we found it heavy, greasy and samey. The only flavour seemed to be from chilli which was harsh.)

On landing at Gatwick we had to retrieve our bags then buy a bus ticket to Heathrow (£27 but it took only 90 minutes). We had time for a coffee and Danish pastry. At Heathrow T5 we had the queuing for security checks etc again, then found a quiet(ish) place to try to snooze for our 5 hours there. Our flight to Newcastle was an hour late, then it was the metro into Gosforth to pick up the car from #3 daughter. Ella and Nathaniel were on good form - lovely to see them. He is excited about the World Cup and drew England in the school sweepstake.

From Gosforth it was almost an hour’s drive home. The house was very cold so the heating is on as is the electric blanket on the bed.

We’ve had a wonderful experience in Mexico though travelling 2400km from Mexico City to Cancun in a small minibus might not be for everyone.
