Providing Wang Support
Today's blip might best be described as a tad niche. It's an advertisement for a computer and IT support company called Wang, which had the tag line "We're giving our support to sport", from a match day programme for the Littlewoods Challenge Cup semi-final replay on 4th March 1987. I did warn you about the niche part!
I loved the draughtsmanship of this little cartoon but the programme itself set me off on a stroll (o.k maybe more of a yomp!) down memory lane.
My brother was actually at this game supporting his team, Arsenal, against the home side Spurs (the game was being played at White Hart Lane). Unfortunately the work friend he went to the game with was a Spurs fan so after buying their tickets (from a ticket tout outside the ground for the exorbitant fee of £12.00 each) they had to stand in the Spurs end.
One of his main memories of the game was that as the crowd started to grow before kick-off there began to be a bit of a crush and as they surged forward during exciting moments in the game he was actually lifted off his feet (this was long before all seater stadiums came into force).
Thankfully the surges subsided and Arsenal went on to win the game to progress to the final later that year at Wembley. He remembers that he was just about to jump with joy at the winning goal when it suddenly struck him that he was amongst thousands of disgruntled Spurs fans and thought better of it!
The Spurs side that day included Ray Clemence, Ossie Ardiles, Gary Mabbutt, Chris Waddle and Clive Allen, with the Arsenal team comprising of such players as John Lukic, Charlie Nicholas, Tony Adams, Naill Quinn, David Rocastle, Michael Thomas and Viv Anderson. What a roll call!
Another Arsenal player, Martin Hayes, described the victory as a trigger moment in his club's history, that it made them feel they were a force and that the trophies would start coming.
The trophies did indeed start coming - first beating my team Liverpool in the final of this competition a few months later and in less than two years they would again go on to beat my team - this time to the First Division title, with Michael Thomas scoring in injury time in the last game of the season to secure the 2 - 0 result they needed to overhaul us. I remember being absolutely gutted watching that goal go in as my brother danced around our living room!
It was the end of an era for Liverpool as we would not win the title again for another 30 years.
