Lisbon
The capital of Portugal, located on the estuary of the Tagus River, is the westernmost capital city in continental Europe.
Much of the city centre was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. It is well known for Fado music. And of course blue tiles and the Pastel de Nata - delicious custard tarts.

Today is the last full day of our cruise. We chose to spend it walking around the historic and narrow streets of Alfama. The area was all that I had imagined with a maze of narrow winding streets, plenty of stairs, washing hanging from windows to dry, with terraces allowing views of rooftops and the water below. And of course the famous number 28 tram.

When we return we will have time discover more of this special city.

Arco da Rua Augusta - Praca do Comercio (photo)
This magnificent arch was built after the 1755 earthquake and stands like an entrance gate to the city.
We walked through this square before wandering into Alfama.
