Port of Leixoes, Matosinhos, Portugal

This Portuguese port serves the city of Porto. It is an artificial harbour on the Atlantic Ocean, within the town of Matosinhos, 9 km northwest of central Porto.
Porto is unable to have a deep water harbour of its own.

Leixoes Cruise Terminal
This photo was taken as our cruise ship entered the harbour. It shows the lighthouse and the very stylish terminal building.
The building was designed to “resemble the anchorages of the boats to the wharfs” And it is covered with one million tiles.
Research laboratories from the University of Porto related to aquatic sciences are also part of the structure.

Because we would be returning to Porto later in our travels we chose to visit Barcelos, a medieval village in the Minho region of Portugal.
The Barcelos Rooster is one of Portugal’s famous icons so it was fascinating visiting here, and even getting to paint our very own ceramic rooster.

Before saying farewell to Matosinhos we spent time ashore walking along the beach and wide promenade, visiting the Tragedy of the Sea monument, the Senhor do Padrao Dome and of course the eye catching She Changes (Anemone) sculpture.
