The sign
Since KFC vacated this spot at Penrith roundabout, quite a while ago now, it has remained empty . . . until work started on it a few months ago. Such a lot of work has been going on, the building has been almost rebuilt, inside and out. I did find out it was to be a branch of Tim Hortons and today, as we drove past, I noticed the sign had gone up. So we stopped and I took the photo.
Tim Hortons is a Canadian company serving light snacks (coffee and donuts mainly!). There are a number of outlets in the UK, but they only arrived here in 2017. Many people have never heard of it . . . we have!
When we were on one of our Canada trips, and were driving around quite a bit, we found Tim Hortons were all over the place and it was possible to get good coffee there. However, it was quite a skill actually getting the coffee! One had to get past the massive selection of donuts, donuts of every shape, size and colour, and other baked goods. Having got through this, one had to negotiate the huge selection of beverages - coffees of every flavour (this is where I found out that coffee didn’t necessarily have to taste of coffee!!), with additions and toppings etc. At last one might get to the end and be served an espresso, although one had to be very vigilant to ensure that nothing was added, including the extra water with which they always wanted to dilute the coffee. Finally we might make it to the pay desk, clutching our tiny cup, only to be asked ‘do you want some milk in that?’
It was good coffee and we were glad of it, but I doubt we will be using this place . . . when it eventually opens.
Funny that this place, serving all those highly processed donuts and pastries, is directly opposite the local hospital!
