Back blip due to patchy wifi
An early start for our morning cruise at 6:30. Birdwatching was the main event - 13 new species were spotted : 5/8 hornbill varieties as well as eagles, storks, kingfisher, and an amazing spot of reticulated python , and a resting water lizard. We parked up at the edge of a water lily marsh on an oxbow lake, for coffee, revelling in the beauty before heading back for breakfast at about 9:15.
No sooner had we sat down than our guide Abbas came to tell us of an orangutan sighting near to the local market, so we were up like a shot!
Unbelievable to see the 25 year old male about 30ft up, literally a stones throw from the market. A film company were there too using the footage for a CBC documentary about corridors that orangutans.
I am so thrilled to have seen a WILD orangutan.
We then relaxed by the pool before lunch and then a siesta before another evening cruise.
This time we went up river and before too long spotted a few boats with passengers craning into the trees- another orangutan, eating and moving slowly through the foliage!
We also spotted the elusive stork billed kingfisher which posed for ages and the white bellied sea eagle flew over head, and plenty of macaques and proboscis monkeys. Even better down a small tributary we were able to catch sight of an orangutan arm hanging in a nest and another sitting in a tree.
To see 4 wild orangutans in one day was remarkable.
