'Alpha's Despair' ('Alfas Verzweiflung')

If I'm honest, I really didn't fancy another a day sitting around, but the Minx was right to say that I should rest my foot for the morning. In the afternoon, though, we went down on the tram to the Munch Museum, which was the one 'must do' on our Oslo list.

To be honest, I'm not particularly well-informed when it comes to Munch, but the Minx's enthusiasm suggested that, in a whole museum dedicated to the fellow, I'd find something to like. And I did.

Whilst I wasn't much of a fan of the pastel, impressionist (?) paintings, I enjoyed some of the sketches, particularly this one, taken from Munch's own alarming, surreal creation story, 'Alfa und Omega'.

Of course, this particular drawing, 'Alpha's Despair', which is taken from the series, is reminiscent of his best known work, 'The Scream'. What I learned today is that there are multiple versions of that work, three of which are at the Munch Museum.

Each one is shown for an hour at the time, so while we saw a sketch and a crayon version, we didn't see the oil painting that the Minx was keen to take a look at. I guess we'll have to come back!
